I slam my hand down on the intercom and
yell, “Devlin, get the hell in here.” Thankfully, I didn’t yell “Devlin the
Devil” as Ris would have done, but I’m sure it still lit a fire under his ass.
Before thirty seconds go by, Devlin, my
head legal counsel, rushes into the room.
“What’s up?”
Turning to him with barely controlled rage,
I throw the contract down on the desk. “You wanna tell me how a Harvard
educated lawyer missed a contract addendum worth nine hundred thousand fucking
dollars?”
“What? You have to be kidding me! I combed
through it ten times!”
“Welp, kiddo, looks like you should have
gone through it eleven times, because I found it at a glance. Want me to read
the contract to you as a bedtime story? Maybe get you some crayons so you can
doodle on it through your dinner of chicken nuggets and fries? We can play
tic-tac-toe on the back of the pages, best two out of three. I’ll even give you
the top left corner move.”
Devlin grabs the contract off of my desk
and starts to pick through it again. “If you weren’t my boss, I’d tell you to
fuck off.”
“And if you weren’t one of the best lawyers
out there, I’d fire your ass. Now go wash the finger paint off your hands.
Playtime is over.”
As Devlin rushes from my office I shake my
head, breathing in deeply to calm myself down. Everyone makes mistakes. Nine
times out of ten, he’s the one to pick up those issues, so I’ve got to cut him
some slack. But he’s not getting away with this scott-free. Smiling to myself I
hatch up my revenge, and it’s going to be epic. Having our security team move
his entire office down to a closet which currently houses our cleaning
supplies, without removing the cleaning supplies, is perfect.
Returning to my desk, I notice something
else in the contract.
TPS
Industries.
Reaching for my cell, I dial a number by
heart. Within two rings, the line is picked up.
“Storm? David here. I need you to do a full
workup for me on TPS Industries.”
“Give me forty-eight hours.”
“Storm, I don’t keep you on full-time
retainer for fucking nothing. Get me a full background check plus any
additionals. You have twelve hours. Period. I want to know everything. If this
is one guy, I want to know his whole history including where he went to
elementary school and if he wears super tight tighty-whities or you can ‘storm’
your ass back to the U.K. Got it?”
“Got it.”

Born in the midwest, Rae Daniel has been telling stories her entire life. After earning her degree in History from Old Dominion University, she found her niche in the professional world as an analyst.
